Unless he’s in a tight niche and/or has a solid book of business, 4 bucks a mile is hard to believe and I have access to numerous load boards. Building a solid customer base takes a lot of work and capital because most customers aren’t gonna even look at you unless you have enough trucks to move a chunk of their freight.

Things were good until 2022 when earnings dropped. Looking to go owner-operator soon. Got my CDL A through a mega carrier, which paid $5,000 upfront. I repaid $2,500 after a year and left. Now, I have all my endorsements. Regret not trying tankers or specialized freight, as LTL has slowed down significantly. Considering hauling containers since I’m near the ports in Jacksonville, FL. It might be convenient.

Donovan’s not completely wrong in his responses but there’s just a lot of holes in his perspective and he’s too dogmatic and way too excited. Myron’s approach is way more palatable for someone who disagrees especially when he frames his responses in a question.

Great podcast, I have been an owner operator for 7 years and would recommend people definitely start out being a driver before you buy a truck. Look into niches that not everyone is doing, hauling steel, dump truck work, tankers, heavy haul, go into a job where you can learn on the companies dime and take your knowledge to start your own business.
